From Clayton, take US 56 to Springer, up I-25 about seven miles and then go west on state road 58.  This will take you through the beautiful Cimarron Canyon  This is about twenty miles of twisties, following the river, and extremely scenic riding!.  There is usually some excellent fly-fishing along here, if you are interested.  Camping is permitted as well.  From the town of Cimarron, continue on to Eagle Nest on US 64.  Once you have reached Eagle Nest, continue south on US 64.  This is part of “The Enchanted Circle” Scenic ByWay, and is well worth the effort to get to.

Northern New Mexico Mountains Motorcycling in Taos

US 64 will take you over to Taos where you can sync up with our route from Durango to Albuquerque through Taos.

View from High Road to Taos

As an alternative, head out of Eagle Nest on US 64 and turn south on NM 434 to Angel Fire and on to Mora.  This is roughly 40 miles of sometimes narrow, very twisty roads through beautiful mountain scenery.  Watch out for the unexpected tight turns!  A great ride through pretty isolated territory.

NM 434

From Mora, turn right onto NM 518 to La Cueva, Sapello and into Las Vegas (New Mexico that is!)  Las Vegas is a quaint town without all the tourists of Taos and Santa Fe.  Unfortunately, from here you have to hop on the Interstate.  Fortunately, this is a fairly interesting piece of interstate and it's less than an hour.  Continue on I-25 past Santa Fe and take exit 276 (NM 14) south towards Cerrillos.

Highway NM 14

The Ortiz Mountains

This is another Scenic ByWay - The Turquoise Trail.  This road links up with our route to Sandia Crest.
Continue south on NM 14 to Tijeras and continue on old US 66 into Albuquerque.

Here is a  basic map of the route from Clayton through Taos to the Sandia Classic.
Here are two maps from Eagle Next to Las Vegas - Map 1 & Map 2.
